A new Suberites (Demospongiae: Hadromerida: Suberitidae) from the tropical Indo-West Pacific Naturalis
Becking, L.E.; Lim, S.C..
In this paper we describe Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. (Porifera: Demospongiae: Hadromerida: Suberitidae) from four enclosed anchialine lakes located in Indonesia and from a confined system in Singapore. Initially this species was thought to be specific to anchialine lakes, but further comparison to coastal areas indicated that it is more widespread in inshore systems. We have used morphological characters to distinguish this species and a molecular marker to confirm that all types are the same species. Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. is encrusting or massive with small protrusions or larger globular branches. The external colour can be olive-green, blue, purple, red-orange, or orange-yellow. Suberites diversicolor spec. nov. differs from known...

Acute toxicity of nitrate in Litopenaeus vannamei juveniles at low salinity levels Ciência Rural
Alves Neto,Inácio; Brandão,Hellyjúnyor; Furtado,Plínio Schmidt; Wasielesky Jr,Wilson.
ABSTRACT: Different technologies have been developed to improve the performance of Litopenaeus vannamei in low salinity, mainly in super-intensive systems like recirculation and BFT (Biofloc Technology System) systems. However, there is an accumulation of toxic nitrogenous compounds to the shrimps such as nitrate, that at high concentrations and depending on the salinity of the culture water can be lethal. Acute toxicity tests allow to analyze the relationship between the compound and other abiotic or biotic variables. The aim of this research was to determine the acute toxicity and safety level of nitrate (N-NO3 -) for juveniles of L. vannamei at salinities of 5 and 10g.L-1. For salinity of 5g.L-1, a control and 5 treatments were tested, with nitrate...

Determinación comparativa de la producción primaria con las técnicas de 14C y O2 en aguas salobres con diferentes grados de Eutroficación OceanDocs
Gocke, Klaus; Hernández-J., Carlos A..

Distribution, persistence and change in the macrobenthos of the lagoon of Lesina (Apulia, southern Adriatic Sea) ArchiMer
Nonnis Marzano, C; Scalera Liaci, L; Fianchini, A; Gravina, F; Mercurio, M; Corriero, G.
The benthic community of the lagoon of Lesina was studied from July 2000 to June 2001. The distribution of the main macrophytobenthic species was recorded by visual census at 24 stations in July 2000. The macrofauna, from both hard and soft substrates, was analyzed at five stations with seasonal frequency; in addition, the main hydrologic parameters were recorded monthly. The lagoon was mainly characterized by brackish water, with salinity values decreasing from west to east (annual mean: 23.3 psu). It showed mild water temperatures throughout the year (annual mean: 19.8 degreesC) and moderately high values of dissolved oxygen (annual mean: 9.9 ppm). No dystrophic crises were observed during the period of study. In the eastern basin, Zostera noltii...

Genetic Differentiation in West African Lagoon Fishes OceanDocs
Agnese, J.F..
Most of the fishes living in the lagoons do not spend all their time in these brackishwaters. Sometimes, they go back to the river to spawn as in the case of freshwater fishes like Chrysichthys nigrodigitatus. Others like marine fishes (e.g., Ethmalosa jimbriata) feed or reproduce in lagoons for a time. Even true lagoon fishes are generally able to live in freshwater and/or in marine water. This is the case for two brackishwater tilapias, Sarotherodon melanotheron and Tilapia guineensis. Both are present in lagoons from Senegal to Congo (formerly Zaire). S. melanotheron is present in marine water near Dakar, Senegal, and in some freshwater lakes in Cote d'Ivoire. 1: guineensis is also present in freshwater in Cote d'Ivoire.

Impact of drainage water inflow on the environmental conditions and fishery resources of lake borollus OceanDocs
Al Sayes, A.; Radwan, A.; Shakweer, L..
The brackish water lake Borollus occupies a central position at the north between the two branches of the Nile delta. This lake has a particular importance in the fish economy of Egypt. Therefore environmental and fisheries investigation was carried out at the lake during 2000–2002, where 15 stations covering the whole area of the lake were sampled. The present study points out that: 1. The water transparency of the lake is low where the average Secchi disc depth ranged between 21.14 cm and 43.89 cm. 2. The average water temperature attained its minimum in winter and ranged between 16.20 °C and 17.80 °C. The highest temperature was in summer where it ranged between 28.33 °C and 28.52 °C. 3. The recorded pH values indicate that the lake water was generally...

Life cycles in brackish habitats: adaptive strategies of some polychaetes from the Venice lagoon ArchiMer
Prevedelli, D; Simonini, R.
The life cycle of five species of polychaetes living in the Venice lagoon is analysed with the aim of finding out if some traits can be interpreted as an adaptation to brackish environments. The studied species are characterized by different sizes and reproductive strategies. Marphysa sanguinea is a large-sized, annual iteroparous species belonging to the Eunicidae family that reproduces without epitokal modification. Perinereis cultrifera and P. rullieri are large-sized semelparous species belonging to the Nereididae family: the first reproduce with epitokal metamorphosis, the second do not. Ophryotrocha labronica and Dinophilus gyrociliatus are small iteroparous species with semi-continuous reproduction belonging to the Dorvilleidae and Dinophilidae...

Neocyclops (Protoneocyclops) ferrarii, a new species of cyclopid (Copepoda: Cyclopoida) from Belize, with remarks on the morphology of the genus Neocyclops Naturalis
Falavigna da Rocha, Carlos Eduardo.
Neocyclops (Protoneocyclops) ferrarii sp. n. is described from Candy’s Pond, Twin Cays, Belize. It is morphologically closest to N. (P.) wellsi Petkovski, 1986 from Mozambique and N. (P.) herbsti Petkovski, 1986 from the Red Sea. Pediger 1 in Neocyclops is distinct although reduced and often concealed beneath the cephalic shield. Specimens of Neocyclops (N.) vicinus and N. (N.) medius showed the same condition, warranting the supposition that the free pediger 1 is a consistent feature of the genus. The genital double somite bears a transverse cuticular thickening which apparently supports the seminal receptacle. The importance of the integumental pore patterns of the urosome and legs as useful taxonomic characters is pointed out.

On the evolution of reproductive potentials in a brackish water meiobenthic community OMA
Heip, C.H.R..
The realized and intrinsic rates of increase of several meiobenthic populations are compared. The realized rate of increase is remarkably similar among four species of copepods, which leads to the conclusion that dominance is not a function of rate of increase or parameters influencing this rate. The result is investigated in the light of Vandermeer's (1975) Beta-competition. There is also a remarkable agreement between the values of the predator <i>Protohydra leuckarti</i> and its principal prey <i>Tachidius discipes</i>. The intrinsic rates of natural increase vary more, but are a linear function of temperature in all species investigated. This is in agreement with the theory that natural selection acts against nonlinear dynamic...

Saline irrigation water indices affect morphophysiological characteristics of collard Horticultura Brasileira
Viana,Jonathan dos S; Palaretti,Luiz Fabiano; Sousa,Vinicius M de; Barbosa,José de A; Bertino,Antonio Michael P; Faria,Rogério T de; Dalri,Alexandre B.
ABSTRACT Collard is a vegetable widely consumed in Brazil. However, the quality and production of this vegetable depend on the supply and quality of water. Water stress and saline stress can make it impossible to grow. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of morphophysiological characteristics of collard cv. Georgia under irrigation levels and saline indices after the first defoliation. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse, under random blocks design, and the treatments consisted of combinations of five water electrical conductivities (CEi in dS m-1: C1 =0.80; C2 =1.30; C3 = 1.80; C4 = 2.30; C5 = 2.80) and four irrigation levels based on the vase capacity (PwC: L1 = 55%; L2 = 70%; L3 = 85%; L4 = 100%), with four replications....

Salinity and flow rates of nutrient solution on cauliflower biometrics in NFT hydroponic system AGRIAMBI
Soares,Hammady R. e; Silva,Ênio F. de F. e; Silva,Gerônimo F. da; Cruz,Adiel F. da S.; Santos Júnior,José A.; Rolim,Mário M..
ABSTRACT The use of brackish water in hydroponic crops represents an alternative for vegetable production. In this context, two experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of using brackish water to prepare the nutrient solution and replace the evapotranspired depth, applied at different flow rates, on cauliflower biometrics in NFT (nutrient film technique) hydroponic system. In both experiments, the experimental design was completely randomized with four repetitions, in a 6 x 2 factorial scheme: six levels of water electrical conductivity (ECw) in interaction with two flow rates of nutrient solution application in the hydroponic channels (1.5 and 2.5 L min-1). In Experiment I, brackish waters with different EC (1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5 and 5.5 dS m-1),...

Seasonal succession of cyanoprokaryotes in a hypereutrophic oligo-mesohaline lagoon from the South of France ArchiMer
Chomerat, Nicolas; Garnier, Robert; Bertrand, Céline; Cazaubon, Arlette.
The Bolmon lagoon (South of France) is an oligo-mesohaline coastal lagoon that has undergone intense eutrophication in the past decades, resulting from a strong concentration of human activities in its drainage basin. Consequently, it exhibits some characteristics typical of an advanced trophic state; namely, the disappearance of submerged vegetation, the permanently intense phytoplankton growth and the recurrence of cyanoprokaryote blooms. As cyanoprokaryote dominance in south-temperate saline lagoons is little reported, we carried out this study in order to understand the seasonal variations in the phytoplankton composition and biomass, and to analyse the influence of environmental parameters such as salinity, nutrients and climate on the seasonal...

Selection of Arthrospira platensis strains with productivity in brackish water with high boron levels for commercial production in the Lluta Valley Electron. J. Biotechnol.
Oxa,Patricio; Bastías,Elizabeth; Uribe,Eduardo.
Adaptation and selection of Arthrospira platensis strains, for cultivation in brackish water with excess boron (B) in the Lluta Valley can become an interesting alternative that would allow to extend these cultures to areas that possess the environmental conditions, but that lack the fresh water needed to do it. Strains TX98 and P88 were evaluated in laboratory conditions with three different media of brackish water and with the white medium, the Zarrouk modified medium (MZM). The growing media with brackish water with a B concentration present in the Lluta River of 20 mgL-1 (B20) and medium with 30 mgL-1 (B30), and 10 mg L-1 of B (B10). The effect of the different media on the growing parameters with a culture temperature of 25 ± 1ºC in the three...

The culture of Nile tilapia at different salinities using a biofloc system Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Souza,Rafael Liano de; Lima,Eduardo Cesar Rodrigues de; Melo,Fabiana Penalva de; Ferreira,Maria Gabriela Padilha; Correia,Eudes de Souza.
ABSTRACT The influence of water salinity on the culture of Nile tilapia with biofloc was evaluated using indicators of water quality, zootechnical performance and animal welfare. Five treatments of different salinities were adopted (0, 4, 8, 12 and 16 g L-1) with three replications. The tilapia were cultured for 90 days and stocked in glass fiber tanks (800 L) at a density of 30 fish m-3 with a mean initial weight of 93.8 ± 0.89 g. Water temperature, chlorophyll-a, sedimentable solids and total suspended solids showed no difference between salinities (p>0.05). The levels of total ammonia nitrogen (3.94 mg L-1) and nitrite nitrogen (0.82 mg L-1) were lower at the salinity of 0 g L-1 compared to the highest salinity (16 g L-1) (p≤0.05). The final weight...
